Understanding the anatomy of the foot

The foot consists of 26 bones, 120 ligaments, 33 joints and 20 separate muscles, which work together to control the movement of its individual parts.  The foot contains almost one quarter of the body’s bones.

The complex construction of the feet enables them to absorb close to 100 tons of force per day.  Our feet support our body weight and each day they are exposed to grueling punishments in the form of poor fitting shoes, sports injuries, occupational traumas or the stress of walking on hard surfaces.

It is no wonder that when our feet have been overworked or treated badly, they are vulnerable to damage from external forces or from hereditary tendencies.

Disorders of the foot and ankle develop from a wide range of causes, many of which can be treated with reconstructive foot surgery. Reconstructive surgery can help repair birth defects, diseases, injuries and other foot problems that can benefit patients’ medical and aesthetic needs. When more conservative treatment methods fail or are not an option, reconstructive surgery is often effective in permanently treating many foot disorders.

Reconstructive foot surgery can be used to treat conditions such as:

  • Trauma
  • Vascular diseases
  • Metabolic diseases
  • Tumors
  • Lesions
  • Infections
  • Genetic disorders
  • Arthritic diseases

The surgery performed depends on the type and severity of the condition, but can restore function and stability to the foot, as well as relieve pain and restore proper appearance. Surgery can involve any part of the foot and may involve tendon, bone, joint, tissue or skin repair. Screws, pins, wires and plates may be required to help the foot heal and ensure a full recovery, and may or may not be removed later. Reconstructive surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis with minimally invasive techniques, while complex conditions may still require a traditional open procedure. Recovery time depends on the type of condition being treated, and may also be accompanied by physical therapy and immobilization with a cast or brace.

Our foot doctors are specially trained and experienced in performing a variety of reconstructive procedures designed to restore your foot back to its original health and allow for full functionality.
